BRUNSWICK
A Winthrop man was arrested after refusing to exit his vehicle after crashing into a field in Brunswick early Sunday morning.
According to Brunswick Police Capt. Mark Waltz, police had responded to a single-vehicle accident at the intersection of Old Bath Road and Dolloff Drive. While investigating that accident, Officer Jerod Verrill witnessed another car traveling with its headlights off before going off the road, said Waltz.
According to Waltz, that vehicle “missed a tree by about 10 yards” before driving into a field.
When police approached the car they found that the driver, Barry Coyle, 54, appeared to have a “glazed look,” said Waltz, and he “refused interaction” with police.
Police also reported the odor of marijuana and alcohol from outside the vehicle, and saw a 12-pack of Coors Light on the passenger seat.
According to Waltz, Coyle refused to comply with officers’ request to exit the vehicle, keeping the doors and windows locked. Police used a collapsible baton to break the passenger-side window of the vehicle in order to gain access and remove Coyle from the car, said Waltz.
After checking Coyle’s identity, police learned Coyle was wanted on a warrant out of Androscoggin Superior Court for failing to appear in court to answer charges of operating after habitual offender revocation and for failing to stop for an officer. Coyle was charged by Brunswick police for operating under the influence, operating after habitual offender revocation, displaying a fictitious inspection sticker, sale and use of drug paraphernalia for possessing a marijuana pipe, and possession of marijuana.
Jail and bail
Coyle was transported to the Brunswick Police Department for booking before being sent to Cumberland County Jail. Bail was set at $500 on the warrant, and $1,000 for the new charges.
He is scheduled to appear Aug. 19 in Cumberland County Superior Court.
Coyle was not injured, and there were no reported injuries from the first vehicle crash.
