A metal structure that once supported a steam pipe and water line across the Saco River, according to Saco city documents, is removed Monday morning by Scott Construction Corporation.
The structure was removed to make way for a 134-foot steel truss pedestrian bridge that will connect Biddeford’s North Dam Mill to Saco Island. Easements from property owners on both sides of the river were acquired and the project is expected to be completed by October.
The cost of the project is nearly $600,000; Biddeford and Saco will each pay 10 percent of the cost and the Maine Department of Transportation will pay the remaining 80 percent, according to Biddeford Planning Engineer Jennie Franceschi.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
