TRENTON, N.J. — Eric Wooten and two relievers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Trenton Thunder (39-45) took the series opener from the Portland Sea Dogs (54-28) 2-0 on Monday night at Arm & Hammer Park. Portland drops its first game of the trip and finished June 16-10.

Trenton scored both runs with two outs, receiving a run-scoring single by Peter O’Brien in the first.

The Thunder added its second run in the fourth. O’Brien led off with a single, followed by a walk to Tyler Austin. After a 6-4-3 double play, Casey Stevenson blooped a run-scoring single to left.

Wooten (3-3) earned the win for Trenton, firing 6.1 innings on five hits, two walks and four strikeouts. The lefty held the Sea Dogs 1-for-7 with runners-in-scoring position.

Taylor Garrison entered the game in the seventh inning and recorded five outs for the hold. Tyler Webb pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save in eight chances.

Despite his third quality start in Double-A, Luis Diaz (2-1) took his first loss in a Sea Dog uniform. The righty gave up both runs over six innings on seven hits. Noe Ramirez closed out the night with two perfect innings.

Derrik Gibson went 1-for-2 with two walks and finished June with a .404 average. Gibson has reached base safely 17 times during the trip. Blake Swihart went 2-for-3 with a walk and Matt Spring went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. Portland had just five hits and finished 1-for-10 with RISP.

The Sea Dogs are 8-5 against Trenton this season.

The Sea Dogs continue a four-game series against the Trenton Thunder (Yankees affiliate) with game two tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Arm & Hammer Park.
