The black-and-white photo above ran on Page 1 of the July 16, 1960, Portland Evening Express alongside a news story about a $65,000 renovation project at the First Baptist Church, the large structure in the center of the photograph. In addition to new sprinkler systems and baptismal stalls, the project lowered the steeple tower due to safety concerns. “The Rev. William J. McIlhenny, D.D., says it is the first major work done on the tower since the church was built in 1869,” according to the story.

The Portland Room of the Portland Public Library is in the process of organizing and conserving the archival collection of original Portland Press Herald, Maine Sunday Telegram and Evening Express photographic negatives — a major collection that spans from 1937 to 2005.
