AUGUSTA

Four Maine residents backing independent Eliot Cutler are challenging a law that prevents them from contributing as much to independent candidates as Democrats or Republicans.

The lawsuit was filed Monday in the U.S. District Court against Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap and the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices.

Currently, independents can only raise $1,500 per donor, while Democratic and Republican candidates can raise twice as much because they can accept funds for the primary and general elections.

The Cutler supporters say the limit “subordinates the interest” of independent voters and candidates who are not affiliated with a major party.
