CANAAN — Two teenagers were arrested Wednesday morning after allegedly breaking into a Main Street home and cutting the copper tubing to an active propane line, police said.
Hunter C. Prew, 18, of Newport, and Ryan Gaudet, 19, of Hartland, were each charged with burglary, theft and criminal mischief, according to a news release from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.
The two were found hiding in a small storage area of the house when police responded to a neighbor’s report of two strangers on the property around 8:30 a.m. while the owners were not at home, according to the release.
The back door of the house had been broken into, a gas stove had been pulled from the wall and the copper tubing had been cut.
“The intent was to steal the copper. This could have been an extremely dangerous situation because they cut the tubing to an active propane line,” Lancaster said.
The Canaan Fire Department and Central Maine Power Co. also responded.
Prew and Gaudet were taken to the Somerset County Jail and are scheduled to appear in court Nov.12.
