Mayweather, Maidana set for rematch
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Floyd Mayweather Jr. will fight a rematch Sept. 13 with Marcos Maidana, the Argentinian who gave him a tougher battle than expected when they met in May.
Mayweather announced Thursday that Maidana would get a rematch in a pay-per-view fight from the MGM Grand hotel-casino. Mayweather won the first fight between the two by majority decision, but Maidana was given credit for taking the fight to the undefeated welterweight champion.
Maidana said after the fight he thought he won, and that Mayweather never hurt him. “He wasn’t that tough,” Maidana said.
Punch stats showed Mayweather landing 230 of 426 punches to 221 of 858 for Maidana. It was the most punches landed by any fighter against Mayweather in 38 fights where punch stats were compiled.
Mayweather is 46-0 with 26 knockouts and Maidana is 35-4 with 31 knockouts. The fight will be promoted by Golden Boy Promotions.
Former UNH staffer gets suspended sentence
DURHAM, N.H. (AP) — The former director of basketball operations at the University of New Hampshire accused of secretly taking photos of players in a locker room has received a suspended sentence.
Scott Weitzell of Newmarket, had been accused of taking the photos during a Jan. 20 UNH game hosted at the University of Vermont.
The 50-year-old Weitzell was suspended from his position in February and was later fired.
Foster’s Daily Democrat reports he recently pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest. He received a suspended 180-day jail sentence. Prosecutors also agreed to drop Weitzell’s felony charge of falsifying evidence as part of a plea deal.
California Chrome to return July 17
LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. (AP) — Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner California Chrome is set to return to Los Alamitos on July 17 from an extended layoff after his Triple Crown bid ended in defeat.
The colt, who finished fourth in the Belmont Stakes in his quest to become the first Triple Crown winner in 36 years, has been taking time off at Harris Farms in Coalinga, California.
California Chrome’s first race since the Belmont on June 7 could come in September at Los Alamitos, his home track in Orange County.
Trainer Art Sherman has said California Chrome is ultimately being pointed toward the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 1 at Santa Anita.
