A 27-year-old homeless man managed to elude police for more than two hours on the Frank Woods Bridge between Brunswick and Topsham early Saturday morning.

Brunswick Police said Eric Wallace was charged with criminal trespass and creating a police standoff on the bridge, which crosses the Androscoggin River on U.S. Route 201. Wallace and another man were spotted on top of the steel truss bridge by Brunswick Police at 12:20 a.m. after receiving a complaint. One of the men descended without incident but Wallace tried to conceal himself by lying down along the top beam, police said.

Wallace worked his way along the bridge toward Topsham and Topsham police were called to the scene.

Wallace then climbed down and disappeared under the bridge. Police boats were deployed by both departments and officers in harnesses searched under the bridge. Wallace was found at 2:42 a.m. hiding on a girder under the bridge. Officers negotiated with Wallace for more than an hour before he climbed out and was arrested.

Wallace is also facing two active warrants for his arrest on charges of failure to appear. He is being held at Cumberland County Jail.
