Music’s Quill concert at library

The Freeport Community Library will host a classical music concert Friday, July 25, at 7 p.m., with lutenist Timothy Burris and tenor Timothy Neill Johnson – a duo known as Music’s Quill. Music selections include works by Robert Jones, Francis Pilkington, Philip Rosseter, Robert de Visee and Charles Colman.

Johnson has performed and recorded with many ensembles here and abroad. These include the Los Angeles Baroque Ensemble, La Petite Bande, Collegium Vocale, Handel Society of Baltimore, Le Concert Spirituel of Paris and the Portland Symphony Orchestra. He is on the faculty of both Bowdoin College and the University of Maine in Augusta.

Burris has performed widely in Europe and the United States, including appearances with world-renowned early music vocalists Derek Lee Ragin and Jennifer Lane. His recordings include modern premieres of 18th-century works. He is on the faculty of Colby College.

Music’s Quill has produced, in two volumes, the first complete recording of the songs of Philip Rosseter. CDs by the duo will be available for purchase at the library.

Maine humor on stage

Randy Judkins and Barney Martin, aka the Downeast Hysterical Society, will bring their Maine comedy-variety show of novelty songs, Maine characters and comic sketches to the Theater Of Awesome, 5 Depot St. in Freeport, on Thursday and Friday, July 17 and 18, at 7:30 p.m.

Curtain goes up for ‘Wizard of Oz’

Freeport Players’ production of “The Wizard of Oz” opens Thursday, July 17, with a preview performance at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door. Additional performances are on Friday and Saturdays, July 18, 19, 25 and 26, at 7 p.m., and Sundays, July 20 and 27, at 2 p.m. Tickets for weekend performances are available at The Thrift Shop at Freeport Community Center and online at www.fcponline.org. Adults are $10 and children under 18 are $5.

Circus Smirkus returns to Merriconeag School

Circus Smirkus, Vermont’s award-winning international youth circus, will be at Merriconeag Waldorf School, 57 Desert Road in Freeport, Monday, Aug. 4, and Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 1 and 6 p.m. both days.

The traveling youth circus is performing 66 shows this summer, with stops in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, upstate New York and Maine. Thirty stars, ages 11 to 18, bring polished circus skills from all parts of the country and the world. This year’s troupe hails from nine states – California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Texas, Vermont and Mexico. The 2014 Big Top Tour takes to the road in late June and travels through mid-August.

The theme for this summer’s circus is “Anchors Away for Atlantis.” The troupe will explore the ocean in all of its beauty and mystery – both above and below the surface. Tickets range from $18-$21 and are available at Royal River Natural Foods in Freeport or online at http://smirkus.org/.

Library Friends meet Monday

Friends of the Freeport Community Library will hold its monthly meeting Monday, July 21, at 6:30 p.m. at the library. All are welcome to attend the meeting and join the volunteers who support and promote the library.

In addition to covering regular business, Friends volunteers will set an agenda for an August brainstorming session to discuss how the group should move forward in the coming year.

Since forming in 2011, the group has provided free or discounted museum and park passes for patrons, started sponsoring a “Meet the Author” series of book talks, advocated for the addition of a technology librarian and offered support for a wide variety of library events and programs. Blueberry festival Aug. 1-3

South Freeport Congregational Church’s Summer Blueberry Festival will be held Friday, Aug. 1-Sunday, Aug. 3, at 98 South Freeport Road, South Freeport. On Friday night there will be a free band concert, attic treasures and jewelry sale. The sale continues the next day, which also features “Spark’s Ark” animals, miniature horse carriage rides, interactive music by Earth Jams, Vandini magic and balloon show, hula hooping, a bounce house, face painting, games and more. Arts and crafts, lobster roll lunch, barbecue cookout dinner, blueberry baked goods and fresh-squeezed blueberry lemonade will be available for purchase.

Masons cooking baked ham supper

The Freeport Masons will host a baked ham supper on Saturday, July 19, at the Masonic Lodge on Mallett Drive in Freeport from 5-6:30 p.m. The menu will feature baked ham with mashed potatoes, two vegetables, homemade biscuits, dessert and beverage. The cost is $8 for adults, with children under 12 at half price.

Bird migration topic of talk

Naturalist and author Scott Weidensaul will present a program, “Living in the Wind: Exploring Bird Migration and Simple Ways to Save Birds,” Friday, July 18, from 6:30-8 p.m., in the Morrell Meeting Room, Curtis Memorial Library, Brunswick. Freeport Wild Bird Supply is a co-sponsor of the program, along with Wicked Joe Coffee Co., Birds and Beans Coffee and Mid-Coast Audubon Society.

Weidensaul explores the wonder and mechanics of migration, and the simple, effective ways people can help save birds, from what we plant in our gardens to what we pour into our morning mug of coffee.

Weidensaul is the author of more than two-dozen books on natural history, including the Pulitzer Prize finalist, “Living on the Wind,” about bird migration, and “Return to Wild America: A Yearlong Search for the Continent’s Natural Soul.” His latest book is “The First Frontier: The Forgotten History of Struggle, Savagery and Endurance in Early America.”

Weidensaul, who lives in Pennsylvania, is a frequent visitor to Maine and is director of ornithology and a teacher at Audubon’s Hog Island camp in Bremen.

The library’s board of trustees gifted the garden, designed by Susan Cherbuliez and put together by Matt Carter of Green Island Stonework. The space is not designed for foot travel; rather, it is for viewing.
