PORTLAND (AP) — Severe storms have rolled through Maine, leaving behind downed trees and power lines and other damage.

York police say a large tree fell across the parking lot of a church Tuesday night, crushing and damaging a few cars. No one was injured.

Authorities say strong winds took down trees and power lines from York to St. Albans.

The National Weather Service confirms radar detected a tornado near the town of Starks earlier in the evening and possibly another twister in nearby Farmington.

Mike Smith, emergency management director for Somerset County, tells the Morning Sentinel that there was a report of a tornado in the town of St. Albans.

Funnel clouds and tornadoes also were reported in Cornville, Mercer and Industry.

Meteorologist Tom Hawley of the National Weather Service in Gray said this morning that no tornadoes have been confirmed, but agency inspectors will head out this week to survey the damage.

The state’s two major electric utilities were reporting about 500 customers without power as of this morning.

No major injuries were reported.

A flash flood watch remains in effect through today for parts of western Maine.
