FREEPORT
Nomination papers for the November elections will be available beginning next Monday, July 28, with several seats opening for elected officials on the Town Council and key boards.
Three seats with three-year terms will be up for election on the seven-member Town Council; the seats are currently occupied by Sarah Tracy, District 2; vice-chair Kristina Egan, District 3; and councilor at-large, Richard DeGrandpre.
Tracy was elected to the council with 304 votes at a March 20, 2013 special election to replace councilor Kate Arno, who resigned her position. At that election, opponent Joyce Clarkson-Veilleux received 133 votes.
Egan has served on the council since November 2011, replacing incumbent councilor Joe Migliaccio 494-381.
Tracy and Egan were not immediately reachable Monday for comment about whether they would be seeking re-election.
Incumbent councilor-atlarge Richard DeGrandpre ran against Marie Gunning for the seat in the November 2011 election, winning 1,585- 1391. On Monday, DeGrandpre said he planned to pick up nomination papers for another three-year term.
Valid nomination papers for District 2 and 3 are required to have 50 signatures, while the councilor atlarge position requires 100 signatures.
Two seats on the six-member Regional School Unit 5 Board of Director will also be up for election in November, as chairman Nelson Larkins’ and member Beth Parker’s three-year terms will expire. Valid nomination papers must receive 100 signatures for these seats.
Two seats are up for election on the seven-member quasi-municipal Sewer District Board of Trustees, as chairman Michael Ashby’s and member Timothy Whitacre’s terms are expiring. Nomination papers require 25 signatures for these seats.
One seat is opening on the Water District Board of Trustees. Board member Edmund Theriault’s term is expiring, and Freeport town clerk Tracey Stevens said Theriault announced he would not be taking out papers. Nomination papers for this seat require 25 signatures.
Nomination papers must be returned to the Freeport town clerk no later than 6 p.m. on Sept. 10. For more information call town clerk Tracey Stevens at 865-4743 or email at [email protected].
