NORTH BERWICK — Police here say it appears that the man who died on the tracks when struck by an Amtrak Downeaster train Wednesday night committed suicide.
North Berwick Police Chief Stephen Peasley this morning said the investigation is continuing, but that information gleaned so far points to suicide by Paul Voisine, 43, who lived on Mill Lane.
Voisine had purportedly posted his intentions on his Facebook page. The posting, which spoke of a troubled marriage, was copied and appeared in comment sections on the pages of others on Wednesday evening.
The fatality took place on the tracks on Main Street adjacent to Town Pizza.
The train ”“ full of passengers ”“ struck Voisine shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday. Peasley said police received the call about 7:12 p.m.
An Amtrak spokesman said 88 passengers were onboard the northbound train, which departed Boston’s North Station around 5 p.m. No passengers or crew members were injured.
The death caused significant delays on the line.
Peasley said some passengers left the train, but others waited. He said the scene was cleared and the train proceeded on its way about 10 p.m.
Local police and Pan Am Railways, which owns the rail line, are investigating.
