As the Green Independent candidate for Maine State House District 54 (Topsham) the message I consistently hear from voters is that today’s politicians have lost touch with their constituents. Because of the lack of communication our legislators are alienating the electorate. By behaving in a divisive manner they continue to fail the needs of Maine citizens and families. Due to this feedback, I would like to officially invite my opponents to two town hall style debates that involve direct participation with the residents of the district.

I believe that voters deserve candidates who will interact with them directly. We need to drop the party politics and make a choice as to whether we’re going to get something done or not get something done. As long as we keep bickering about the way things are said, as opposed to what’s being said, we’re not going to get there. I think that myself and my opponents should debate each other in town hall-style formats as a way to connect with voters and understand their needs. Town hall style debates will encourage us to communicate with voters in a meaningful way, as opposed to traditional moderated debates where each candidate “prepares polished and scripted performances.”

I welcome the opportunity to discuss the issues with my opponents and the residents of Topsham. These debates could be a spirited forum for discussion about how to move forward on behalf of Maine people. Talking to citizens about their ideas for getting beyond party politics is what will work best for Mainers. As a social worker my experience resolving conflict and negotiating differences, skills I feel will serve the district well in Augusta, I understand the need for open and direct dialogue.

Whoever wins this election needs to be able to work with people of opposing views towards a goal of unity. People expect it. I look forward to hearing from both of my opponents regarding their participation in these debates.
