SACO – A local landmark dating back to 1774, the former Cutts Mansion “is said to have been the most costly dwelling in Maine at the time it was built.” That was on Factory Island in town, and the owner was Col. Thomas Cutts, a prominent and prosperous merchant with many seagoing interests. In 1937, the three-story mansion was disassembled, and the first and top levels were floated about two miles down the Saco to a lovely 10-acre site just off Ferry Road.

Today, the house is two stories and the lot just under an acre, but still like a little park. The owner receives priority treatment at Marston’s Marina just down the street, a nice tie to the home’s maritime heritage. And at a total 4,030 square feet, with so much of its original architecture and so many of its original features intact, the home retains its wonderful period character.

Converted into a two-unit some years ago, the house has the added advantage of an income-producer ($1,100 monthly) with a longtime tenant in place. The upstairs rental has its own furnace, is responsible for heat and electricity, and has its own driveway and private entrance.

In most respects, the main floor and that above are mirror images in their floor plans, but with intriguing differences in the details. Each has three bedrooms and a full bath, but the first floor could easily have a second bath added near the master bedroom, with conversion of one of the two walk-in closets in the hall.

While the first floor has a gracious foyer, and a paneled living room with an oversized, wood-burning fireplace (note the rough-beamed frame) the upstairs living room is even broader, and has two charming window alcoves (the dormers); the master bedroom has one, too.

Ceilings are high, most floors are oak, and closets are ample. Both levels have walk-in pantries with built-in shelving, and the owner’s pretty, blue-and-white kitchen was just updated with tile counters and backsplashes. There’s a walk-in attic above the attached garage, and the full basement has a separate workshop room with double bench.
