SACO – A local landmark dating back to 1774, the former Cutts Mansion “is said to have been the most costly dwelling in Maine at the time it was built.” That was on Factory Island in town, and the owner was Col. Thomas Cutts, a prominent and prosperous merchant with many seagoing interests. In 1937, the three-story mansion was disassembled, and the first and top levels were floated about two miles down the Saco to a lovely 10-acre site just off Ferry Road.

Today, the house is two stories and the lot just under an acre, but still like a little park. The owner receives priority treatment at Marston’s Marina just down the street, a nice tie to the home’s maritime heritage. Both levels have walk-in pantries with built-in shelving, and the owner’s pretty, blue-and-white kitchen was just updated with tile counters and backsplashes. There’s a walk-in attic above the attached garage, and the full basement has a separate workshop room with double bench.
