WELLS — Virginia Gray Harris, 88, of Wells, passed away peacefully July 27 at Hyder hospice house in Dover, New Hampshire.

Virginia grew up in Wells with her aunt Louise Waterhouse and uncle Fred Gray, who ran a local business, George F. Gray & Son’s Monuments.

After marrying, Virginia and her husband George Harris took over the business. Virginia was a homemaker who loved cooking, baking, shopping, gardening, going out to eat, spending summers at their camp in Lincoln, taking rides on back roads, and sightseeing all over New England. She was a very fun, giving person, always helping people out. She was a wonderful wife and mother, and a very loving grandmother to her one and only granddaughter.

Her husband passed in 2004, and since then, she stayed close to home with loving care from her family until she recently took ill.

Virginia is survived by: her daughter, Gail Melanson of Wells; son, Gregory Harris of Ossipee, New Hampshire; and granddaughter, Michelle Melanson of Ogunquit.

Visiting hours will be held at Johnson’s Funeral Home at 26 Market St. in North Berwick, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a graveside service at Ocean View Cemetery, Post Road, Wells. There will be a celebration of life gathering at her daughter Gail’s house after the service on Route 9 in Wells. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Berwick Fire Department, P.O. Box 230, North Berwick, ME 03906; or Hyder Family Hospice, 285 County Farm Road, Dover, NH 03820. Arrangements are in the care of the Johnson Funeral Home, North Berwick.
