WEST BATH — Robert Wilton Adams Sr., 83 years young, passed away at Hill House in Bath on July 27, 2014, after a period of declining health. He was born June 13, 1931, son of Harold and Marion Bates Adams in Bath, Maine.

Bob graduated from Morse High School in the class of 1949, the first class to graduate from Morse wearing the now traditional caps and gowns. He joined the U.S. Air Force in July 1951 and served until July 1955. He served our country during the Korean War including being stationed at Taegu AFB in Korea.

In 1956, he met the love of his life Martha Jane Wood, and they were married on Oct. 20 at the Winter Street Congregational Church in Bath.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years Martha, his two loving children, Sandra Adams Waters of Chicago, IL and Robert Adams Jr.and his partner Laura Plunkett of West Port Island. His four grandchildren who were his pride and joy, Justin Dolan and his wife Katrina of Lisbon, ME, Season Fitzpatrick and her husband Sean of Chicago, IL, Brandon Adams and his partner Zoe Goehring of Portland, ME and Zachary Adams of Portland, ME. “Gamp’s” greatest pleasures came from the littlest members of his family his four great-grandchildren: Hunter Dolan, Nuala and Fiona Fitzpatrick and Wyatt Adams who he will continue to live on through as they enjoy growing up doing so many of the things he loved to do. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Charles T. Wood and his wife Helly of Fort Collins, CO, a sister-in-law Sallyann Hinckley of Alna, ME, a nephew, two nieces and two cousins, many wonderful friends and neighbors.

Bob was employed at Bath Iron Works from 1950 until his retirement in 1989 in the Quality Control Department. He enjoyed lobstering part-time since his teenage years, and upon his retirement from BIW he was able to fulfill his lifelong desire. Lobstering full-time from his boat, the SEASON, on the New Meadows River and having his grandsons Justin and Brandon as bait boys and wife, Martha, as sternwoman, his dreams became reality.

Spending summers at the family cottage in Sabino, West Bath, since his childhood, Bob and Martha built a year-round home there in 1978. They wintered in Plant City, Fla., from 1993 through 2002 where they enjoyed visits from family and friends and frequented Busch Gardens enjoying the shows and Bob’s favorite, riding the roller coasters!

He was a member of the Bath Country Club, where he made his hole-in-one, former member of the senior men’s golf league, former member of the Plant City Golf Club and Country Meadows Golf Club in Plant City, Fla. An avid skier, racing and winning medals in many NASTAR races, Bob and his family enjoyed many winters at their A-frame camp that he built at Sugarloaf and was a former member of the Sugarloaf Ski Club. He was a big Bowdoin College hockey fan and he and Martha often traveled to many of the teams out of state games and tournaments over the years. He was a trustee for many years of the Sabino Hall Improvement Association as well. He enjoyed fly fishing and taking his annual trip with his son to Kennebago, a tradition they held for 42 years. He will also be missed by his beloved dog, Bella, who enjoyed sharing a bowl of ice cream with him every evening.

A celebration of his life will be held at the Winter Street Center at 880 Washington St. (across from the Library Park) in Bath on Sunday, Aug. 3 at 12 noon for family and friends to come and remember Bob and enjoy some of his favorite foods.
