I read with amusement the latest report of the Brunswick West ‘NIMBY’ Coalition. Your columnist, Douglas Rooks got it right, it is time to “Let the Trains Run on Time” and acknowledge that building the Downeaster layover facility will improve service for the greater community, save money and, oh by the way, give idling trains a place to go so they do not have to leave their engines running during the day. The Brunswick West folks have the opportunity to influence the details of the building but, it is reported, will not participate unless the facility is moved elsewhere. Much like the child who can’t get his way, they will take the ball home rather than play.

We live in Arrowsic and use the trains as often as we can. We also are within earshot of Bath Iron Works. The greater community is fortunate to have it as a engine to our economy. But, we hear loud or weird noises at various times of the day and night. When ships come and go, we are subjected to restricted use of the Kennebec, overhead security airplanes and tourists who want to see the sailing. Yet, we are happy to have them as a neighbor. Perhaps the folks in Brunswick might be willing to rise to see some greater good.
