SHAPLEIGH — A suspicious white powder found in a DVD case caused the York County Emergency Management Agency HAZMAT team to be called in, resulting in a detour of traffic around a portion of Shapleigh Corner Road for several hours on Saturday.

The powder was determined to be harmless.

Around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Christopher Emmons and Whitney Galeucia went to the Redbox DVD machine at the 7-11 store at 489 Main St. in Springvale to get a movie, according to of the York County Chief Deputy Sheriff William King.

While Emmons drove, Galeucia opened the DVD case and found an unknown white powder.

“Fearing the powder may be an infectious substance,” stated King, the couple drove to their apartment on Shapleigh Corner Road, washed their hands, and called the police around 4 p.m.

This is the second instance of a suspicious white powder being found in the last two weeks, according to the York County Emergency Management Agency. A homeowner in Berwick reported finding a suspicious white powder in their mailbox, which turned out to be cornstarch.
