FREEPORT – Nomination papers aren’t due to be returned to the Town Hall until Sept. 10, but already candidates are lining up to run for the Regional School Unit 5 Board of Directors and Town Council.

Elections will be held on Nov. 4.

Two seats will be up for a vote on the school board, and three on the council.

Charly Haversat, a key force in the petition drive that got Freeport residents to consider withdrawal from RSU 5, and Lindsay Sterling, a food writer, both seek school board seats for the first time. Chairman Nelson Larkins said last week he is undecided on running, while Beth Parker has taken out papers to retain her seat.

Both Larkins and Parker have been school board members since 2009, when RSU 5 was formed. Parker served on the Freeport School Committee from 2005-2009.

School board candidates need to gather 100 signatures. Terms are three years.

Town Council incumbents Kristina Egan in District 3, Sarah Tracy in District 2 and Richard DeGrandpre, an at-large councilor, all have taken out nomination papers to run again. Egan is council vice chairwoman. DeGrandpre is the longest-serving councilor, having been on the panel since 2002. Tracy joined the Town Council in 2013.

Terms are three years. The at-large candidate must turn in 100 signatures while the district candidates need to collect 50 signatures.

Michael Ashby has taken out papers to retain his position on the Sewer District board. Ashby replaced Timothy Whitaker, who resigned.

Town Clerk Tracey Stevens said that Edmond Theriault has indicated he does not intend to seek re-election to the Water District board.
