Rangers add Mike Carp to active roster

CHICAGO (AP) — The Texas Rangers have added outfielder-first baseman Mike Carp to their 25-man roster.

Catcher Chris Gimenez was placed Monday on the paternity list, where he can be up to three days.

The moves were made before the Rangers’ game at the Chicago White Sox, a day after Texas got Carp on a waiver claim from Boston.

Carp hit .198 without a homer and nine RBIs in 42 games this season for Boston. He is a career .260 hitter in 301 major league games with Seattle (2009-12) and Boston (2013-14).

Left-hander Ryan Feierabend was assigned outright to Triple-A Round Rock, where he made 19 starts before getting called up July 12. He made six relief appearances for Texas, which designated him for assignment on Friday.

Cubs prospect Baez set to join team

DENVER (AP) — Touted prospect Javier Baez will join the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday in Colorado and could make his major league debut in the three-game series against the Rockies.

The 21-year-old Baez got off to a slow start this year in the minors, but has been playing well of late. The middle infielder, who is known for his tremendous bat speed, hit .300 with 12 homers and 34 RBIs in his last 32 games for Triple-A Iowa.

Baez will have his contract purchased from the minors before the series opener against Colorado. There was no word Monday on a corresponding roster move.

Baez is part of a loaded minor league system for Chicago that Cubs fans are hoping will lead the team back to respectability after a string of down years. The Cubs are 47-63 this season and in last in the NL Central.

Giants’ Cain to get season-ending surgery

NEW YORK (AP) — San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain will have season-ending surgery next week to remove bone chips in his right elbow.

Manager Bruce Bochy said “it was inevitable” that Cain would have surgery. Bochy said after Monday’s 4-3 win over the New York Mets that Cain would have the operation and look forward to getting ready for spring training.

The 29-year-old Cain hasn’t pitched since July 9. The three-time All-Star played catch at Citi Field on Friday to test out how he was feeling.

Cain was 2-7 with a 4.18 ERA in 15 starts.

The Giants are in the race for the NL West title. They recently acquired veteran pitcher Jake Peavy in a trade with Boston.

U.S. cuts Wall, Beal, Millsap, down to 16

NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. men’s national team cut John Wall, Bradley Beal and Paul Millsap on Monday, a person with knowledge of the details said, leaving the roster at 16 players.

With Paul George lost to a broken right leg, the Americans will have to drop four more players before the World Cup of Basketball starts later this month in Spain.

The Americans made the cuts that had been planned for Saturday but delayed after George’s injury, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the roster moves were to be announced Tuesday. They were first reported by Yahoo Sports.

Remaining in the roster pool are: Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant, Chicago’s Derrick Rose, Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving, New Orleans’ Anthony Davis, Golden State’s Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, Houston’s James Harden, Atlanta’s Kyle Korver, Sacramento’s DeMarcus Cousins, Dallas’ Chandler Parsons, Utah’s Gordon Hayward, Toronto’s DeMar DeRozan, Portland’s Damian Lillard, Denver’s Kenneth Faried, Detroit’s Andre Drummond and Brooklyn’s Mason Plumlee.

They will report to Chicago for practices that begin Aug. 14.

Wall and Beal, teammates in Washington, were part of a crowded backcourt that’s particularly deep at point guard, Wall’s position. Millsap, Atlanta’s All-Star forward, was the last player added to the roster of players who were invited to Las Vegas for training camp.
