WELLS — The Wells Reserve at Laudholm announces the following upcoming programs scheduled to take place this month:
Monday, Aug. 11
Ӣ Wilderness Survivor, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Kids learn the basics of wilderness safety, such as becoming oriented when lost, discovering helpful plants and animals, and building a survival pack and shelter. They will also enjoy a survival scavenger hunt. For ages 6-10. Reservations are required.
”¢ Laudholm’s Farming Past, 9-11 a.m.: Delve into the rich history of the Wells Reserve at Laudholm, from American Indian life to English settlement and from farmland to estuarine reserve. This docent-led walk covers about half a mile. Free with site admission.
Ӣ Meet the Scientists: Up Close with Larval Fish, 1-2 p.m.: Enjoy a window on the world of Wells Reserve science. Peer into an active laboratory while getting the straight story on the intricacies of fish larvae with research assistant Timothy Dubay. Free with site admission.
Tuesday, Aug. 12
Ӣ Kayaking on the Little River Estuary, 12-3 p.m.: Paddle the quiet waters of a Maine estuary, watching for wildlife and learning about the habitat from a registered Maine Kayak Guide. For ages 12 and up; some restrictions apply. Registration is required.
Ӣ Join local astronomer Scott Negley to learn about a variety of space wonders, from 8-9:30 p.m., including comets, meteors and asteroids, and see the Perseid meteor shower. If weather permits after the indoor presentation, there will be a star party to view summer constellations and some meteors as the Perseids peak. Registration is required.
Wednesday, Aug. 13
Ӣ Bird Banding Demonstration, 7 a.m. to noon: Visit the bird banding station at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm with master bander June Ficker, who has been studying birds at the reserve for more than 25 years and has banded thousands of birds during that time. Free with site admission.
”¢ Earth Crusaders, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Protect nature by hiking to the ocean’s edge for a beach cleanup, rescue monarch butterflies in fields of milkweed, and make an energy-saving solar oven to take home. For ages 6-10. Reservations are required.
Thursday, Aug. 14
Ӣ Kayaking on the Little River Estuary, 12:30-3:30 p.m.: Paddle the quiet waters of a Maine estuary, watching for wildlife and learning about the habitat from a registered Maine Kayak Guide. For ages 12 and up; some restrictions apply. Registration is required.
Friday, Aug. 15
Ӣ Life Between the Tides Walk, 9-11 a.m.: Explore the intertidal zone at Laudholm Beach on a walk that covers about a mile. Free with site admission.
