ALFRED — A Saco man arrested in connection with a fatal hit and run has been indicted.

Leo Bedard, 45, of Ocean Park Road, was indicted recently at York County Superior Court on charges of leaving the scene of an accident, tampering with a witness, failure to report an accident, operating after suspension and two counts of violating bail conditions.

An indictment is not a finding of guilt, but a finding that enough evidence exists to move forward with prosecution.

Eighty-seven-year-old Jewell Friedman was struck around 10 a.m. Saturday, June 21 while walking at the intersection of Ferry road and Ocean Greens Drive, according to police reports.

Eyewitnesses told police the car that struck Friedman did not stop after the collision.

Police received a tip and Bedard was arrested two days later in relation to the reported hit and run.

Saco police officers found and seized a white pickup truck on Ocean Park Road that fit the description of the vehicle from eyewitness accounts and had damage consistent with evidence left at the scene of the crime, according to police.

Friedman was transported to Southern Maine Medical Center and later transferred to Maine Medical Center where she died three weeks later.
