Girls on the Run registration

Registration for the fall season of Girls on the Run, a program hosted by the Casco Bay YMCA, is now open. Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity based positive youth development program for girls in third through fifth grade. Life skills are taught through interactive lessons and running games. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.

The team meets twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5:30 p.m. for 10 weeks and will begin on Sept. 9. The program fee is $130 and financial assistance is available. For more information or to register, see http://girlsontherunmaine.org/.

Wild Bird Supply celebrating 10 years

Jeannette and Derek Lovitch, owners of Freeport Wild Bird Supply, 541 Route 1, are marking their 10th year of providing products, knowledge and services for wild-bird enthusiasts of all levels. A full weekend of events has been planned for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 23-24, to celebrate and thank the community. Saturday’s lineup begins with a free bird walk at 8 a.m. (meet at the store). In the afternoon, the Chewonki Foundation will give two presentations: “The Bugmobile” at 1:45 and “Owls of Maine” at 3:30. This is an opportunity for both kids and adults to see some insects and owls up close.

Throughout the weekend, door prizes and gifts will be given away. Free Birds and Beans coffee will be on hand from Wicked Joe Coffee Roasting Co., in addition to some other treats. All events are free and open to the public. No advance reservations needed.

Freeport Players plan anniversary picnic

Freeport Players is inviting all former cast members, crew and volunteers from 25 years of live theater in Freeport, to “the biggest cast party in the world” – a potluck picnic on Sunday, Aug. 17, starting at noon, at Winslow Park in the Moose Lodge Shelter. There is no charge and the admission fee to the park will be waived. The event will be held rain or shine.

Those attending should bring something to grill and if their last name begins with A-I, bring munchies and appetizers. Those whose last name begins with J-R should bring a salad or side dish, and those whose last name begins with S-Z should bring fruit or cookies. All should bring your own beverages, and no alcohol is allowed. The Freeport Players will provide all paper goods, condiments, birthday cake, door prizes and raffle items.

1912 Cafe? launches scholarship

The 1912 Cafe?, located at the L.L. Bean Flagship Store, has announced a new scholarship program.

The cafe? is selling reusable canvas shopping bags with the 1912 Cafe? logo for $10. All proceeds will to toward a Greater Freeport community scholarship fund to be awarded in the spring of 2015 to a deserving Freeport High School graduate. Energy grant to aid homeowners

The Town of Freeport has been awarded a grant from the Cumberland County Community Development Program (CDBG program) to provide income-eligible Freeport homeowners energy assessments and cost-effective measures to reduce their heating costs through a grant the town received from the Cumberland County Community Development Block Grant program. Participation in this program typically saves 100 gallons of heating fuel per household. Up to 75 households will benefit from this program. Priority will be given to low- to moderate- income households, with a preference to those in greatest need. Those interested must meet with the energy grant coordinator to complete an application. Project Review Board seeks candidates

The town’s Appointments Committee is looking to fill a vacancy on the Project Review Board. The ideal candidate will be skilled in historical preservation,

Winslow Park concert

On Thursday, Aug. 14, Cindy Bullens will perform at 6:30 p.m. at Winslow Park in Freeport. Bullens, who lives in Maine, is a two-time Grammy nominee with a resume that included the “Grease” soundtrack and touring with Elton John. Admission is free with park admission. Talk about books

Book lovers are invited to join a discussion group that meets at Freeport Community Library on the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m.

The group meets in the library sunroom year-round, and discussions typically last until 7:45 p.m. with light refreshments provided by group members. The upcoming book discussion for Wednesday, Sept. 3 is “The House of Sand and Fog,” by Andre Dubus III, a National Book Award finalist, Oprah Book Club Pick, New York Times bestseller and the basis for the Oscar-nominated film by the same title.

The novel selected for Oct. 1 is “The Stone Diaries,” by Carol Shields. The selection for Nov. 5 is Jane Austen’s “Emma.”

meet Monday

Friends of the Freeport Community Library will hold its monthly meeting Monday, Aug. 18, at 6 p.m. at the library. All are welcome to attend the meeting and join the volunteers who support and promote the library.

This meeting is designed as a brainstorming session about the group’s plans for the future, including its possible short-term goals, new ideas and long-range vision.

GOP group meeting Aug. 20

The Freeport Republican Committee will meet Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 6:30 p.m., at the Masonic Lodge, Mallet Drive, lower level. Those who attend should bring gently used household items for the Masonic Lodge yard sale.

Masons cook meat loaf

The Freeport Masons will host a Down Home Supper on Saturday, Aug. 16, from 5-6:30 p.m., at the Masonic Lodge, Mallet Drive, Freeport. On the menu are homemade meat loaf with mashed potatoes, two vegetables, homemade biscuits, dessert and beverage. The cost is $8 for adults, and half price for children under 12.

Farm offers history tour

Wolfe’s Neck Farm and its surrounding countryside can be explored in a new history tour taking place on Saturday, Aug. 23 and Saturday, Sept. 6, from 10-noon. On the wagon ride to the past, visitors will hear stories of the ship captains, fishermen, farmers, teachers, and homemakers who have lived on Wolfe’s Neck through the past 250 years. Many of the buildings and landscapes of Wolfe’s Neck Farm have remained largely unchanged for centuries. One of the stops on the tour, the historic Pote House, will soon have a documentary about its history.

Tours begin and end at the Red Barn. Advance reservations are strongly recommended; walk-ons will be accommodated if space is available. Tours will operate in fair weather with a minimum of six people. The cost is $6 adults and children 13 and older. Those 12 and under are free. Reserve tickets by calling 869-5433. Not Too Shaap show

Freeport’s Not Too Shaap will perform at Brewer’s Marina on Friday, Aug. 15, outside on the deck from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Brewers will supply hors d’oeuvres and Not Too Shaap will supply the music. Brewer’s is straight down Main Street from the Post Office in South Freeport, across from Harrasseeket Lunch and Lobster. Group members include Tod Donahue, Ellen Ebert, Daric Ebert, Jane Bradley and Chris Nichols.

sets reunion

On Saturday, Aug. 23, members of Freeport High School’s class of 1984 will gather for a reunion at Gritty McDuff’s in Freeport. Happy hour will be from 5-6 p.m. with light hors d’oeuvres. Dinner will be served from 6-8 p.m. There will be a cash bar and music.

Soccer registration

Freeport’s Recreation and Community Education soccer programs will begin in early September. Final registration for the grades 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 soccer league is Aug. 13. Registrations will only be accepted after this date if there is space on a team. If the enrollment numbers do not support gender-specific teams, then the teams will be co-ed.

The grade 5-6 soccer league registration deadline also is Aug. 13. This league has been developed to accommodate fifth- and sixth-grade boys and girls who are too old for rec. soccer but don’t want the commitment of “travel soccer.” Games will be played in area towns with limited traveling required. Teams will play one game per weekend on Saturdays. A schedule will be available in early September. Registrations will only be accepted after this date if there is space on a team.

The registration deadline for Little Falcons Soccer, ages 3-5, is Aug. 29. This program has limited space and fills fast.
