Hutch served with B Company, 5th Marine Division, 28th Regiment in support of the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. This is the same regiment that raised the American flag atop Mt. Suribachi.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, wood carving, glass etching, and was an accomplished yodeler. He enjoyed watching Fred Astaire and John Wayne movies.
