Stuart “Toby” Pennels, 55, the Casco-based financial adviser who was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident near Rangeley on Aug. 3, has been withdrawn from the Senate District 26 race.
According to Jeff Vermette, the treasurer of the Windham Republican Party, Pennels’ wife, Brenda, signed papers officially withdrawing him from the race Wednesday. Vermette said the Maine Republican Party would locate a replacement candidate.
“Due to his current medical condition, and the uncertainty of rehabilitation time, it was obviously not in the best interests of the citizens of District 26 for him to stay in the race,” Vermette said.
Pennels, who has been treated at the Lewiston-based Central Maine Medical Center’s Critical Care Unit, has remained unconscious since the crash, said a family friend, Tom Noonan. A hospital spokesman confirmed on Wednesday that Pennels is listed in critical condition.
“Right now the priority is to have him stabilized and get better,” Noonan said. “A lot of the major things have been addressed but the main thing for him is to regain consciousness and go from there. It’s going to be a long journey for him.”
After riding from the Lakes Region to the Height of Land scenic overview south of Rangeley, Pennels was injured when his motorcycle fishtailed into the left lane of Route 4, veering into the path of an oncoming pickup truck.
