University of Maine Cooperative Extension and the Maine State Beekeepers Association will offer Beginner Bee School in Springvale this fall.
The classes will run from 6-8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, Oct. 1-29, at Anderson Learning Center, 21 Bradeen St., Springvale.
Instructor Larry Peiffer, a master beekeeper and former Maine State Beekeepers Association vice president, will lead the course, discussing honeybee colonies, hive construction, pests and diseases, and honey production. Participants will also observe area hives and gain hands-on experience during a field lab at a later date.
Cost is $90 per person or $130 for two people who share the text and materials. A one-year membership in the York County Beekeepers Association is included with the fee.
Sept. 19 is the deadline to register.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
