
She was born in Gorham on March 15, 1936, a daughter of Ernest S. and Beulah C. (Jewell) Young.
She attended Gorham schools and graduated from Gorham High School in 1955. In 1958 she graduated from Nasson College in Springvale with an AA degree in accounting. She was employed in the Audit Department of Canal National Bank until 1971, Chapman & Drake Insurance as a bookkeeper until 1981, and BIW Credit Union as Collection Manager, retiring in 1990. She was then employed by Dr. Mesrobian and Dr. Patten until 1993, followed by working for Senior Spectrum, retiring in May of 1996.
Mrs. Dickey was passionate in work for the IOOF Ladies Auxiliary, the Rebekah organization. She was past president of Ridgeley Ladies Auxiliary, a charter member of Parmenas Ladies Encampment Auxiliary IOOF in Skowhegan, a past president of the Department Association Ladies Auxiliary Patriarch’s Militant of Maine, appointed as honor guard for International Ladies Auxiliary Patriarch Militant, Past Noble Grand and Past District Deputy of Naragansett Rebekah Lodge in Gorham, and Past President of the Rebekah Assembly of Maine, which is the highest honor to achieve within the state. She was also appointed guardian of the International Association of the Rebekah Assembly. Esther was also a member of the Smith-Tobey American Legion Auxiliary, a Life member of the West Bath Grange, and was very active at the Bath Soup Kitchen.
She was predeceased by her husband, Everson E. Dickey on Feb. 17, 1989; her infant brother, William Edward; infant sister, Mary Belle; and brother, Robert Young and his wife Eleanor.
She is survived by her four nieces, Linda Winship and her husband, Ronald of Windham, Joyce Young and Diane Young of Gorham, and Roberta Morrill and her husband, Richard of Windham; and one nephew, William Young and his wife, Linda of Gorham.
Esther’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Branches Home Care, and in particular, Anna Flood. Anna and the Branches team made it possible for Esther to remain independent in her home for which we are truly grateful.
Visiting hours were held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. with a Rebekah service at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Cressey Road Methodist Church, in Gorham. A funeral service followed at 6 p.m. at the church. Burial will be at Eastern Cemetery in Gorham at a later date.
