Plan for ‘Planapalooza’

The Yarmouth Planning Department has scheduled a number of events and workshops, dubbed “Planapalooza,” all open to the public, from Wednesday, Sept. 17-Monday, Sept. 22.

Planapalooza will enhance Yarmouth village and its neighborhoods in the years to come, strengthen the town’s economic vitality, guide future development, create additional housing and jobs, protect the environment and build connections between both people and places.

The opening presentation, hands-on design workshop and pie social is Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 6-8:30 p.m., at Curtis Hall, North Yarmouth Academy, starting with the pie social.

A breakout meeting with landowners, developers and business owners is Thursday, Sept. 18, from 5-6 p.m., at the Town Hall Community Room. Another breakout meeting – Historic Village and Neighborhood Improvement – is Friday, Sept. 19, from 9-10 a.m., at the Town Hall Community Room. Bike and pedestrian opportunities will be discussed Saturday, Sept. 20, from 10:30-11:30 a.m., at the Town Hall Community Room. From 5-10 p.m., there will be Potluck on the Pavement, plus an interim review, at the Bean parking lot at Yarmouth Crossing. Live music is scheduled for 8 p.m.

A Chilifest is Monday, Sept. 22, at 6 p.m., at Curtis Hall, North Yarmouth Academy, followed by the closing presentation at 6:30 p.m.

Special family events planned include a scavenger hunt Friday, Sept. 19, from 6-8 p.m. at the Beth Condon Butterfly Garden, behind town hall; and a bike parade, rodeo, public works demo site and ice cream social, Sunday, Sept. 21, from 2-4 p.m., at the Bickford Collection, Railroad Square.

Shred documents Sept. 20

The Yarmouth Recycling Committee has announced that Ameriprise Financial will be offering free document shredding on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 8-11 a.m., rain or shine, at Ameriprise Financial, 45 Forest Falls Drive.

Residents will be able to dispose of old documents and records. There is a limit of three boxes per customer. For more information, call 846-1175, ext. 208.

Readers Circle starts season

Merrill Memorial Library Readers Circle will meet Thursday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m., at the Yarmouth History Center, 118 East Elm St.

Yoga studio for kids

Mini Yoga, a new children’s yoga studio at 26 School St. in Yarmouth, will hold an open house Saturday, Sept. 27, from 2-4 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. There will also be a drawing to win a six-week yoga session and yoga mat. The studio owner is Dara Siegl.

World music choir concert Sept. 13

Northern Harmony, a world music choir based in Vermont, presents a concert in Yarmouth on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 7:30 p.m., at the Unitarian Church, 97 Main St. Suggested admission at the door is $12, $8 for students.

The 16 singers, led by Larry Gordon, present a mix of world harmony traditions, including South African songs and dances, traditional polyphony from Georgia, Corsica, and the Balkans, American shape-note singing and quartet gospel, and Renaissance motets. About to embark on their 16th European tour, Northern Harmony has won a wide reputation for its remarkable command of the different singing styles and timbres appropriate to these different traditions. The upcoming two-month tour will take them up and down the East Coast, and then to the United Kingdom, Switzerland, France and Germany.

Northern Harmony is under the umbrella of the world music organization Village Harmony, which sponsors singing camps and workshops in New England and many parts of the world. The singers are primarily young graduates of Village Harmony singing programs, and most have studied traditional singing styles first-hand with native teachers in South Africa, Bulgaria, Corsica and Caucasus Georgia.

Papers ready for council seat

Nomination papers are now available at the Town Clerk’s Office for those interested in seeking one two-year seat on the Town Council. The term expires June 2016.

Twenty-five signatures from registered voters must be obtained and the papers must be returned to Town Hall by 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19. Election hours on Tuesday, Nov. 4, are 7a.m.-8 p.m. at the AMVETS Hall on North Road.
