I take great interest in the outcome of the Town Council’s effort to select a new Town Manager.
The Town Manager position is a critical part of our local government. While taking policy direction from the Council, he or she has much influence in executing that policy. Hiring the best people, finding the proper level of resources for them to work effectively, maintaining fiscal responsibility, and facilitating strong communication at all levels are some of the key actions necessary for success.
We have been fortunate in the past to have talented and thoughtful mangers that have generally served for many years and utilized their leadership and skills to the benefit of our community.
Given the importance of this position, it is critical that the Town Council work together to select an individual that virtually every councilor can stand behind and publicly endorse. A new manager faces a steep learning curve and needs to know that the entire council is supportive and determined to see him or her excel at the job.
The Brunswick community will be well served with a new Town Manager that everyone can support.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
