CAMDEN (AP) — A man who took a pharmacist hostage during an attempted drug store robbery in Camden was found dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
Officers entered the Rite Aid store at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday and found the body of 34-year-old Robert Beerman, Camden Police Chief Randy Gagne said.
Beerman entered the store just after 7 p.m. Monday and took the pharmacist hostage, police said. Police surrounded the building just before 11:30 p.m., and the woman was released unharmed at around the same time.
Local and state police converged on the store and the surrounding neighborhood and nearby streets, including U.S. Route 1, were blocked off during the standoff.
