SACO — A potluck and shopping event to benefit William McKenzie, a 5-year-old boy in Old Orchard Beach with neurofibromatosis type 1, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Saco Elks Club, 68 Ocean Road, Saco.
McKenzie recently had a leg amputated and was fitted with a prosthetic. Because of the disease, McKenzie has had to endure many surgeries, and his symptoms include high blood pressure, tumors and Renal artery stenosis, a narrowing of a kidney artery. The event will raise money to help his family with health care costs.
Admission for Saturday’s event is free, and the price for the potluck is $5 for adults and $2 for children. There will be more than 20 vendors present.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
