WEST GARDINER (AP) — A Maine state lawmaker who’s facing criminal charges after being caught having a sexual encounter in a van in a park-and-ride lot says he’s seeking treatment.

Democratic state Rep. Brian Jones of Freedom was caught by a state trooper late Monday in West Gardiner and was charged with indecent conduct and failure to identify himself, state police said. The van belonged to the woman, who was not charged or identified by police.

Jones, 56, declined to give his name and the trooper uncovered his identity when he found Jones’ car with Maine legislative plates parked across the street.

Jones, who is married with children, is free on bail.

He released a statement in which he blamed his behavior on alcoholism and said he has embarrassed himself. “This has been a struggle for me and my family and I am seeking medical treatment now,” he said.
