Ready, set, run. State, county and municipal elections, plus the election of Maine’s representatives to the U.S. Congress, are all on tap Nov. 4. And with deadlines recently passed for withdrawals from state contests and write-in registration, we’ve prepared a list of those in the running for state and county government offices in our circulation area.
Deadlines for nomination papers for some municipal elections have not yet passed; in Sanford, nominations for city council, school committee and quasi-municipal sewerage and water district trusteeships are due to the city clerk’s office by the close of business today.
There have been a couple of withdrawals from state races: In House District 14, part of Saco, Democrat Barry Hobbins is unopposed after Republican Daphne Warren withdrew, as she indicated the day after she was nominated as a candidate.
And in House District 17, Waterboro and part of Lyman, Democrat Elaine Plourde has withdrawn, meaning Republican Dwayne Prescott is unopposed.
There is a declared write-in candidate in the race for Maine House District 20, which includes Lebanon, Acton, and part of Shapleigh. Harrison Thorp, who lost his primary bid against fellow Republican Karen Gerrish, will go head-to-head with her and Democrat Bettie Harris-Howard on Nov. 4.
And while South Berwick Police Chief Dana Lajoie was examining his chances as a possible write-in candidate after he lost in a three-way Democratic primary for York County sheriff in June, he did not file as a declared write-in, which means Chief Deputy William King, who won the primary, will be sworn in as sheriff Jan. 1.
