FORT KENT (AP) — University of Maine System trustees are meeting to consider asking the state for more money to continue a tuition freeze. They’re also discussing the elimination of three academic programs at the University of Southern Maine.

The budget proposal up for consideration today calls increases from the current $176.2 million to $182.2 million for fiscal year 2016 and $189.1 million for fiscal year 2017. If approved, the system will be able to maintain a tuition freeze in place since the 2012-13 school year for two more years.

The trustees also are scheduled to cast final votes on plans to scrap the American and New England studies, geosciences and the Lewiston Auburn Arts and Humanities programs. Many faculty members and students oppose the move.
