BRUNSWICK

The People Plus FYI! presentation series begins on Sept. 25 with a visit by Captain James A. Kirk of the United States Navy, the commanding officer of the USS Zumwalt.

At 1 p.m. Kirk will talk about the lead ship stealth destroyer, the USS Zumwalt, a new class of ships. Now being built at Bath Iron Works, it has been called the most advanced warship ever constructed for the U.S. Navy.

Kirk will also discuss Adm. Elmo Zumwalt, for whom the ship is named. Zumwalt, the 19th chief of naval operations, was the youngest ever to serve in that capacity. As an admiral, and later as CNO, Zumwalt played a major role in modern naval history, especially during the Vietnam War. A highly decorated naval veteran, Zumwalt is credited with reforming the navy’s personnel policies in an effort to improve enlisted life and to ease racial tensions.

People Plus is located at 35 Union St., in Brunswick. The event is free and open to the public but registration is required. For more information, call 729-0757.
