As the fall sports season chugs toward its midway point, local soccer, field hockey, cross country, golf and volleyball teams continue to show promise.

Here’s a look at what you might have missed and what’s to come:


Brunswick’s football team continues to impress. Last weekend, the Dragons went to defending Class B state champion Cony and avenged last year’s playoff loss with a 52-27 victory. Brunswick hopes to go 4-0 Friday when it goes to 2-1 Skowhegan. Last year, the Dragons handled visiting Skowhegan, 47-26.

In Western B, Morse fell to 1-2 after an 8-0 loss at Gardiner. The Shipbuilders host 2-1 Fryeburg Saturday. Last year, Morse dropped a 22-21 decision at Fryeburg.

Mt. Ararat fell to 0-3 after a 14-11 setback at Fryeburg Academy Saturday. The Eagles look to get in the win column Friday when 0-3 Gorham pays a visit. Last year, Mt. Ararat won at Gorham, 64-0.

Boys’ soccer

On the pitch, Mt. Ararat was 3-1-1 at press time after playing visiting Edward Little to a 1-1 tie last week. The Eagles were at Cony Tuesday, visit Bangor Friday and play host to Oxford Hills Tuesday of next week.

Brunswick handled visiting Messalonskee (5-0) and tied host Bangor (1-1) last week and took a 2-2-1 mark into Tuesday’s game at home against Edward Little. After going to Skowhegan Friday, the Dragons visit Cony Tuesday of next week.

Morse lost at Erskine, 8-0, then beat host Belfast, 3-0, to improve to 1-3-1. The Shipbuilders hosted Camden Hills Tuesday, welcome Erskine Friday and go to Medomak Valley Tuesday of next week.

Girls’ soccer

On the girls’ side, Morse is 3-2 after a 4-0 home win over Camden Hills last Friday. The Shipbuilders were at Camden Hills Tuesday, host Erskine Friday and play host to Medomak Valley Tuesday of next week.

In Eastern A, Brunswick and Mt. Ararat were both 2-2-1 at press time.

The Dragons were coming off a 4-3 win at Messalonskee and a 1-1 home tie against Bangor. Brunswick was at Edward Little Tuesday, hosts Skowhegan Friday and welcomes Cony Tuesday of next week.

The Eagles tied host Edward Little, 2-2, in their most recent outing. After hosting Cony Tuesday and Bangor Thursday, Mt. Ararat goes to Oxford Hills Tuesday of next week.

Field hockey

Brunswick’s field hockey team got in the win column Saturday, edging host Mt. Ararat, 1-0. The Dragons were coming off a 4-0 home loss to Oxford Hills. Brunswick (1-6) was at Messalonskee Tuesday and hosts Mt. Blue Thursday. Monday of next week, the Dragons go to Hampden Academy.

Mt. Ararat preceded its 1-0 home loss to Brunswick with an 8-0 home loss to Lawrence. The 0-7 Eagles were at Edward Little Tuesday and home against Lewiston Thursday. Mt. Ararat goes to Bangor Tuesday of next week.

In Western B, Morse fell to 0-7 after recent losses at home to Brewer (7-2) and at Balfast (12-2). The Shipbuilders were home with Waterville Tuesday and played at Spruce Mountain Thursday. Morse plays host to Oceanside Tuesday of next week.

Cross country

Mt. Ararat hosted Brunswick, Morse and Waterville in a cross country meet last weekend.

In the boys’ competition, the Eagles were first, the Dragons came in second and the Shipbuilders placed third. Individually, Morse’s Christopher Walfield was first in 17 minutes, 6.24 seconds. Mt. Ararat was led by Matt Gott (third, 18:47.17). John Murphy paced Brunswick with a fifth-place finish (18:59.27).

In the girls’ race, the Dragons came in first, the Eagles were third and the Shipbuilders came in fourth. Brunswick’s Tessa Cassidy was the individual winner in 20:44.21. Katherine Leckbee (third, 21:33.18) was the top Mt. Ararat finisher. Morse was paced by Maris Silvestri (sixth, 23:17.50).

Brunswick hosted Morse, Mt. Ararat and Mt. Blue Thursday.


Brunswick’s golf team dropped to 3-4 on the season Monday after a 6-3 loss to Oxford Hills. Morse fell at home to Lincoln Monday, 8-1. Mt. Ararat enjoyed a 7.5-1.5 home win over Edward Little.
