Why do Mainers keep reelecting Republican Susan Collins? We taxpayers subsidize her annual salary of $174,000 plus benefits. Although Senator Collins makes makes three times more in her salary alone than the average salary of a full time American worker, and although 96,000 Mainers make less than $21,000 annually — Collins joined her Republican colleagues to block a bill from even coming to a vote to raise the minimum hourly wage to $10.10. Collins also joined other Republicans to similarly block the Paycheck Fairness Act.
We taxpayers also subsidize Collins’s healthcare. Yet she voted against the Affordable Care Act and continues to vote to repeal it without offering an alternative. Still, some see Collins as a moderate.
Democrat Shenna Bellows supports fair pay, fair trade, a fair tax code and access for all to affordable healthcare. Doesn’t that make Democrat Shenna Bellows the real moderate in this race?

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
