Another Common Ground Fair has been and gone, and it seems to be getting more popular than ever. “We closed down Route 139!” one of the volunteers proclaimed Saturday.
While it’s not as impressive as Arlo Guthrie announcing the closing of the New York Thruway during Woodstock — Route 139 from Fairfield to Unity is, after all, a two-lane road — the sentiment and the sensibility were a lot alike. Even on a dreary day, Common Ground was alive with color, from the bright autumn gourds, pumpkins, and apples to be found at every farmer’s booth, to the homespun sweaters and hats worn by the young volunteers and children who dashed around the fair, to the vegetable costumes worn by the kids in the Organic Parade.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
