“Scotland’s Vote: A Referendum for Independence,” presentation and panel discussion, will be offered Thursday, Oct. 2, in the University Events Room, 7th floor, Glickman Library, University of Southern Maine, Portland campus. A reception will take place from 5:30-6 p.m., with a presentation to follow from 6-8 p.m. A group of expert panelists will discuss the vote in Scotland and what it means, particularly its legal and diplomatic implications. Panelists include Donnie Jack, Scottish Affairs counselor for the Americas, British Embassy, Washington, D.C.; Owen Traylor, consultant and former British diplomat; Nancy K. Gish, USM professor of English and scholar expert on Scottish literature. The event is sponsored by the USM Department of History and Political Science, University of Maine Law School, World Affairs Council of Maine and USM Title III High Impact Practices Grant. Friday, Oct. 3

A Wells Public Library Lunch and Learn with naturalist Josh Fecteau is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 3 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Wells Harbor Park. Join Fecteau for a one-hour, slow-paced nature walk to identify the trees, shrubs and late-blooming wildflowers, as well as the birds seen along the walk. Stay after the program to enjoy some light refreshments in the gazebo. Feel free to bring a lunch, while the library will provide drinks and dessert. Saturday, Oct. 4

A roast beef supper will be held at Cornerstone United Methodist Church, 20 Jenkins Road, Saco, on Oct. 4 from 5-6:30 p.m. The menu will include all-you-can-eat roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, carrots and string beans. Strawberry shortcake will be served for dessert. Cost for adults is $9, and children 11 and younger eat for $4.

An all-you-can-eat bean supper will be served on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 5-6:30 p.m. at the West Kennebunk United Methodist Church, 160 Alfred Road, Kennebunk. The cost is $8 for adults, $3 for children 5-10, and children younger than 5 eat for free. This will be the last bean supper at the church this fall. For more information, call 985-6632.

Monday, Oct. 6

“Muslim Journeys,” the second part of a two-part program designed to help investigate various elements of the Muslim culture, is set for Monday, Oct. 6 at 6:15 p.m. Attend a viewing of the film “Koran By Heart,” followed by a facilitated discussion with Human Rights advocate and Muslim scholar Reza Jalali, who was raised in Iran and has lived in Maine since 1985, where he is currently the Muslim chaplain at Bates College. This program will be held at the Wells High School Auditorium and is co-sponsored by Wells Public Library, Wells-Ogunquit Adult Education and the Maine Humanities Council.
