LEWISTON (AP) — The sixth Dempsey Challenge drew to a close Sunday with cycling events around Maine’s second-largest city.
Patrick Dempsey, who grew up nearby, is among more than 1,000 cyclists taking part in fundraising rides ranging from 10 to 100 miles, followed by closing ceremonies on Sunday.
The “Grey’s Anatomy” actor launched the Dempsey Challenge following the experience of his 77-year-old mother’s battles with ovarian cancer. She passed away in March.
The Dempsey Challenge raises money for Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Last year’s event raised $1.1 million.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
