BIDDEFORD — Elizabeth L. “Betty” Martel, 74, of Biddeford, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2014 at Seal Rock Healthcare in Saco, following a long illness.

She was born March 6, 1940 in Biddeford, a daughter of Henry and Rollande (Roy) Bernier.

Elizabeth was educated locally at St. Andre’s School and was a graduate of St. Andre’s High School in the Class of 1958.

After graduation, she went to work for Thibodeau’s Dairy in Saco as billing secretary.

On May 16, 1964, she married Fernand Martel at St. Andre’s Church.

With the birth of her first child, she quit work and devoted her life to being a homemaker and mother. She was proud of her girls, whom she considered a blessing. Once they were in school, she volunteered her time to the school lunch program and St. Andre’s Funeral Luncheon Program.

Betty enjoyed reading, knitting and family activities.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; and her brother, Robert Bernier.

Surviving are: her husband of 50 years, Fernand Martel of Biddeford; two daughters, Rebecca Lopez and her husband Michael of East Walpole, Massachusetts, and Katherine Mason and her husband David of Marlborough, Massachusetts; grandsons, Matthew and Joshua Lopez; a granddaughter, Kylie Mason; one brother, John Bernier of Spring Hill, Florida; and one sister, Diane Guerrette of Danvers, Massachusetts.

Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 29, 2014 at Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford, ME 04005. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at Most Holy Trinity Church in Saco. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Biddeford.
