In a Mountain Valley Conference girls soccer matchup on Friday, Grady’s goal 10:38 into the contest gave the Saints a 1-0 lead.
On the other end, Schrieber had to put up with a Saints shadow in the form of St. Dom’s midfielder Kym Johnson, who tailed the Greyhound standout for every second of the 80 minutes of play.
The end result, a 1-0 St. Dom’s win, giving the Saints a 7-1 mark, while Lisbon suffered its first loss to fall to 5-1-2, with Winthrop due to visit on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
“We knew coming in that Faith is one of the best players in the conference, with her speed tough to defend,” said Lisbon coach Jake Gentle. “She slipped through and put it into the net. That is why she is Faith Grady.”
“All she needs is that one, and she is our leading scorer for a reason,” said St. Dom’s coach Alicia Pelletier of Grady. “We lost to Madison early off, so that got us down a little bit. We are hitting the hard stretch of our schedule, with Monmouth on Tuesday. It shows that we can battle with the top teams in the league.”
Both coaches praised Johnson for her work on Schrieber, who had one shot on goal.
“Kym is a great, great defender, a great offensive threat too, and unfortunately we put that aside, but she does an amazing job and did everything in her mind and power to take it to Deliah,” said Pelletier. “It is amazing how well she can mark somebody.
“She is a really good defender, and their whole team back there does a good job containing,” said Gentle. “When that happens, we need to have other girls step up, something that really didn’t happen today.”
Only goal
Neither team produced much offense in the first 10 minutes, with only Saints midfielder Kirsten Connor getting a shot through to goal. Lisbon goaltender Ali Sult made the save, one of her five on the day.
The game’s lone goal came on a St. Dom’s rush. Grady gained control, cut between a pair of Lisbon defenders and toed a shot inside the right post for a 1- 0 Saints lead.
St. Dom’s held a 4-0 shot advantage in the opening half, with Lisbon unable to generate a scoring opportunity.
At the half, Gentle told his team to pick up the intensity.
“We knew that we had to come out with a little more intensity after not developing any in the first half,” said Gentle. “We knew we were not going to get many scoring chances, but we had to capitalize on the ones we had.”
Lisbon’s Drew Stewart-Staples let loose a hard, low shot that St. Dom’s goaltender Nicole Robitaille (three saves) scooped up. The Greyhound pressure produced three second-half corner kicks, and big boots from Kailyn Hill allowed Lisbon forwards to push forward.
But, St. Dom’s defenders Payton Winslow, Kaylynn Linck, Sam Ladd, Madison Richard and Emily Caron
