Those who are leading the charge to keep bear baiting, hounding and trapping are once again using smoke and mirrors rather than science and facts to defend these unsportsmanlike and dangerous practices. The Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife claims department biologists oppose the bear referendum. They only need two to oppose it in order to make this claim and they admit they have not even polled their biologists. They have no idea how many oppose or support it. The Department insists that Maine needs to feed millions of pounds of waste to thousands of bears in order to “control” the population. Support of this feeding program doesn’t pass the straight face test and has helped to grow Maine’s bear population by at least 7,000 animals in just 10years. The only science behind feeding bears in order to control their population is garbage science. Please vote YES on Question 1 and stop feeding the bears.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
