WINDHAM — Windham’s Melanie Aldrich made four-straight service points to close out a five-set win (26-24, 17-25, 25-15, 23-25, 15-11) for the Eagles in a 3-2 victory over Thornton Academy in a Class A volleyball match on Wednesday.

The deciding fifth set was all knotted up at 11-11 before Aldrich served the Eagles (5-4) to the 15-11 set win.

Windham won two of the first three sets and led 10-1 in the fourth before the Trojans (4-5) rallied back to win the set, 25-23.

Kaylee Burns had a team-high 10 kills for Thornton, while Kylee Austin had nine and Ashley Howe and Ally Cannon each had seven. Howe also recorded a team-high 19 digs. Julia Chasse led the Trojans with 24 assists.

YARMOUTH 3, KENNEBUNK 0

YARMOUTH — Class B leading Yarmouth (7-1) pulled away from Class A competitor Kennebunk for a 25-23, 25-20, 25-13 straight-sets victory in an interclass volleyball match on Wednesday.

Gaby White slowed down the Clipper attack early with effective blocks in the middle, while outside hitters Meg Dube and Sarah Bradley scored the majority of the Rams’ (2-6) points.

Kennebunk head coach Craig Richardson called the match against a difficult opponent “the best team effort thus far in the season.”

Girls Soccer

THORNTON 6, CHEVERUS 0

PORTLAND — Haley DaGraca and Tori Daigle each had a goal and an assist as visiting Thornton Academy rolled past Cheverus 6-0 in an SMAA girls soccer game at Boulos Stadium on Wednesday.

DaGraca opened the scoring just 1:23 into the game on a pass from Cassidy Cochrane, and Cochrane added a goal of her own later in the first half to put the Trojans (7-1) up 2-0.

Daigle scored on a breakaway to open the second-half scoring three minutes in, then Thornton got goals from Katie Senechal, Hannah McAlary and Skye Murray to close out the victory.

Anna Niedermeyer made 11 saves in net for the Stags (2-4-2).

Lexi Nason and Abbi Cook combined to stop four shots for the Trojans.

GORHAM 4, SANFORD 1

SANFORD — Kiana Plumer and Lizzie Sullivan both scored twice as Gorham topped host Sanford 4-1 in an SMAA girls soccer game at Cobb Stadium on Wednesday.

Plumer opened the scoring less than six minutes in, and Sullivan scored both her goals before halftime to put the Rams (6-2) up 3-0.

Lauren Fink scored the lone goal for the Spartans (2-5-1) with 15:44 left to play, but Plumer put the game away seven minutes later.

Kyla Bragg (five) and Niki Perez (18) combined to stop 23 of 27 shots in goal for Sanford.

Emma Smith made 10 saves for Gorham.

Field Hockey

NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 2, OLD ORCHARD BEACH 0

OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Marina Poole scored a goal in each half to lift North Yarmouth Academy (8-2) to a 2-0 victory over Old Orchard Beach in a WMC field Hockey game under the lights at Joe Regina Field on Wednesday.

The game was scoreless until Poole broke onto the stat sheet with 8:53 left in the first half. She scored again 10 minutes into the second half.

Jenny Cobb made 21 saves in goal for the Seagulls (0-11), who are still looking for their first victory in their return to varsity action.

OOB head coach Shauna Regan said she believes the team has “grown leaps and bounds” after losing 5-0 to the Panthers early in the season.
