THURSDAY

Children’s Nature Program 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Bath

The Kennebec Estuary Land Trust is offering free children’s programs at the Patten Free Library in October. The four-part series will offer nature themed stories and activities about organisms commonly found in Maine but not often studied closely. Kids 4 years old and up are welcome to join KELT’s education coordinator each Thursday in October from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. Children will explore the structure of seaweeds, discover the life cycle of fungi, learn about the environmental significance of unassuming lichens and investigate the unique lives of Maine’s insect eating plants. The programs take place in the library’s Children’s Room, and parents are welcomed and encouraged to take part in the activities. No registration is necessary. These programs are generously supported by the Davenport Trust Fund. The Patten Free Library is located at 33 Summer St. For more information, go to www.kennebecestuary.org or call 442-8400.

UPCOMING

Birding Seminar 7 p.m. in Brunswick

Derek Lovitch of Freeport Wild Bird Supply will share his journey through the main Hawaiian Islands, where far-flung vagrants gave rise to some of the most impressive examples of evolution in the world. Today, drastically altered landscapes have reduced native forest, and diseases and competition has pushed the remaining endemic land birds higher and higher up the slopes of the tallest mountains. The program will focus on what can still be saved and species that are thriving. The program is sponsored by Merrymeeting Audubon and will be held at the Curtis Memorial Library’s Morrell Room on Main Street.
