Partisan rancor permeates debate in the Maine Legislature. Too many feel the need to toe the party line and vote with leadership. Collaboration and compromise seem to be foreign concepts.
I co-chair a small contingent of Democrats and Republicans who seek to work from the middle. We call ourselves the Common Ground Caucus, moderates who try to make a difference. As a property owner in Old Orchard Beach, I am thrilled that our state representative, Sharri MacDonald, is a member of that middle-ground group. She is an intelligent, hardworking young lady who deserves your vote for re-election this fall. She is an incredible advocate for her community, fighting for revenue sharing and a more equitable tax base for Old Orchard Beach. She sponsored a local option tax proposal despite Republican opposition and actually got it through the House with CGC support.
Vote for Sharri.
Rep. Gary Knight (District 81), Livermore Falls

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
