Toronto hands Celtics first loss in preseason

Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan each scored 18 points, Patrick Patterson had 17 and the Toronto Raptors beat Boston 116-109 on Friday at Toronto, handing the Celtics their first defeat in three preseason games.

Avery Bradley led Boston with 22 points while Marcus Thornton had 19 and Brandon Bass 14.

SHANGHAI MASTERS: Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer set up a rematch of their Wimbledon final with convincing straight-set wins to reach the semifinals in China.

The top-ranked Djokovic defeated David Ferrer 6-4, 6-2, while Federer played a nearly flawless second set to beat Julien Benneteau of France 7-6 (4), 6-0.

It will be the 36th meeting in their rivalry, which has been remarkably close, with Federer taking 18 of their matches and Djokovic 17.

GENERALI LADIES: Anna-Lena Friedsam of Germany rallied to defeat Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at Linz, Austria, to advance to her first career semifinal.

The 94th-ranked Friedsam won three qualifying matches and beat the third-seeded Dominika Cibulkova in the first round.

JAPAN WOMEN’S OPEN: Defending champion Samantha Stosur advanced to the semifinals at Osaka, beating Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 6-4, 6-1.

American teenager Madison Keys, one of the favorites, retired from her match against Luksika Kumkhum of Thailand with a shoulder injury while trailing 6-2, 4-3.

GOLF

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Guy Boros birdied the final hole for a 6-under 66 and a one-stroke lead over Tom Lehman and Marco Dawson after the first round of the SAS Championship at Cary, North Carolina.

LPGA: South Korea’s So Yeon Ryu shot a 6-under 65 to take a two-stroke lead in the LPGA Malaysia at Kuala Lumpur.

PGA: Martin Laird bounced back from his first bogey of the new season by running off four straight birdies for a second straight 5-under 67 and a one-shot lead over Bae Sang-moon in the Frys.com Open at Napa, California.

WOMEN’S WORLD CUP: The Canadian Soccer Association opposes a request for an expedited hearing on whether using artificial turf in the 2015 Women’s World Cup discriminates against women.

A group of elite female players filed a complaint last week with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario.
