SACO — Main Street was flooded with all kinds of characters Saturday: princesses, superheros, creatures of the night.

Children came in costume to Saco Spirit’s annual Pumpkin Harvest Festival, and some parents dressed up for the occasion, too.

As for creatures of the night, Aurora the Great Horned Owl stood perched by Derek Small, owner of Wildlife Encounters. Small entertained questions by onlookers and presented facts about Aurora.

“She’s working third shift,” he said.

Local businesses, volunteers and community groups had set up games along Main Street, which was closed off for traffic.

There was a candy toss, a ring toss, and a bean bag toss, to name a few.

There were also craft stations, including a recycled-paper-making activity with representatives from Ecomaine.

And to balance out all the treats that come this time of year, Biddeford Saco Dental Associates were giving out, among other items, toothbrushes and toothpaste and floss.

And how do the children react to getting dental hygiene items?

“They’re actually really excited,” said office manager Tracey Montoya. The little ones liked the kid-friendly toothbrushes with themes that included Minnie Mouse and Monsters Inc., she said.

Montoya said the dental practice wanted to give back to the community.

“We love being in Saco,” she said. “It’s just fun to be out in the community and part of everything.”

Three-year-old Dylan Lacroix, dressed up in a police officer costume, posed for a picture with Saco Patrol Officer Steven Garison.

Kandis Lacroix, Dylan’s mother, said the family enjoys coming to the annual event.

“It’s really great for the kids,” she said.

Adults were enjoying themselves, too. Pauline Park was dancing with the Bill Dodge Auto Park mascot Otto the Moose, as a DJ played dance tunes.

“I love the music,” she said.
