Joyce “Jay” McCreight, candidate for House District 51, is the best neighbor we have ever had. We know that we can count on her from something as minor as a cup of sugar to something as major as representing us in Augusta. We have lived next door to Jay for seven years. During that time, we have interacted with her and her husband, Tim, just about weekly. We have shared meals, vacations and family stories. We know them both very well.
In addition, Jay and Helen have worked together in at least four different groups, two entirely Harpswell based and two extending to people in other towns. In all four cases, Jay has been a central figure, either as the hub through which communication flows and relationships are maintained, or as the official leader. Whether through her infectious laugh, compassionate outlook, terrific organizational skills, or firm commitment, Jay has been a force for the good. These are all qualities that she will bring to bear on her work as our legislator.
If every politician had the strength of character, the talent for collaboration and the ability to inspire trust as Jay does, politicians as a group would be among the most, not least esteemed groups in our country. We are voting for Jay on Nov. 4 with genuine enthusiasm, and we urge you to vote for her too.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
