NEW YORK (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and players’ union chief DeMaurice Smith have agreed to continue discussing changes to the league’s personal conduct policy following a four-hour session in New York on Tuesday.
In an email to player representatives afterward, Smith says he made it clear to the league that the union wants due process.
“While the league currently has great concern for its brand, fairness and justice for our members is more important,” Smith said.
“For us, the starting point for these discussions must be the desire to agree upon a fair personal conduct policy and domestic violence rules from a standpoint of prevention and education. We will not accept a world where all players are viewed as perpetrators first and husbands, fathers, sons and brothers second.”
Rams
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Considering the St. Louis Rams had a two-touchdown lead and lost by two TDs, coach Jeff Fisher found a lot to like in Monday’s 31-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
Fisher accentuated the positives heading to a short week and with the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks up next. He said he’d finished reviewing the defeat by Tuesday morning.
“There were some really, really outstanding individual efforts on some individual plays, so we have to take those positive and move forward,” Fisher said. “We’ll bounce back.”
It’s likely getting more difficult for the Rams (1-4), who are struggling to get wins.
They’re 0-3 at home, also getting routed by Minnesota in the opener and blowing a three-TD lead against Dallas. They spotted the Eagles a 27- point cushion and nearly rallied for the win.
Giants
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz and cornerback Trumaine McBride have been placed on seasonending injured reserve.
The Giants announced the moves late Tuesday, a day after the two veterans had surgery for injuries they suffered during Sunday’s game against Philadelphia Eagles.
Cruz had surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon in his right knee. McBride, who had been the nickel corner since Walter Thurmond was injured in Week 2, had surgery to repair a fractured thumb.
Also Tuesday, the Giants signed free agent receiver Kevin Ogletree and cornerback Chandler Fenner.
Ogletree spent his first four seasons with the Cowboys, whom the Giants play Sunday in Dallas. The six-year veteran played last season with Tampa Bay and Detroit; the Lions cut him on Sept. 20. Ogletree played in 62 regular-season games with four starts, and career totals include 78 receptions for 999 yards (12.8-yard average) and six touchdowns.
Fenner is on the roster for the second time this season. He was signed off the practice squad Oct. 4, and made his NFL debut on special teams the following day in the Giants’ victory over Atlanta. He was waived Oct. 6.
The Giants made moves on their practice squad as well, signing wide receiver Chris Harper, cornerback Victor Hampton and linebacker Carlos Fields and releasing wide receiver Travis Harvey. Cornerback Bennett Jackson (knee) has been placed on practice squad/injured.
Seahawks
RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks have released safety Steven Terrell just two days after he was forced into action against Dallas because of injuries in Seattle’s secondary.
The Seahawks released Terrell on Tuesday and re-signed defensive lineman Greg Scruggs. Terrell was signed off Seattle’s practice squad to the active roster on Saturday before the Seahawks’ game against Dallas.
When Byron Maxwell went down with a calf strain in the first half, Terrell ended up being used as an extra defensive back. He was in on 22 defensive plays and another 10 on special teams.
Scruggs has yet to be active for a game this season as he continues to work back from a knee injury that forced him to miss the entire 2013 season.
Broncos
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Broncos linebacker Danny Trevathan’s broken leg will keep him out longer than expected.
The Broncos placed Trevathan on recallable injured reserve Tuesday.
That means the team’s top tackler from last year can’t practice until Nov. 26 and isn’t eligible to play in a game until Denver visits San Diego on Dec. 14.
Trevathan reinjured his left leg Sunday in his second game back from a broken bone under his kneecap.
